Bycatch Turtles
Reducing the incidental capture of marine turtles
ABOUT
Tropical Shrimp Trawling (TST) is a method to catch shrimp that endangers marine turtles by also capturing large quantities of marine fauna. The Comité Régional des PêchesMaritimes et Elevages Marins de Guyane (CRPMEM) is working to reduce the incidental capture of marine turtles, a problem that can be 97% decreased by using a Turtle Excluder Device (TED) instead of TST. This report describes the urgency and importance for the European Union to establish marine turtle bycatch mitigation measures and for countries exporting trawl-caught shrimp into the EU to adopt them.
RESULT
The report presents recommendations for action and further research related to marine turtle bycatch. Agenda28 worked closely with CRPMEM to create and organize infographics and images that explain the different types of bycatch devices; tables, figures, and testimonials from users to ground the findings and recommendations; and, maps that illustrate import certifications by country to provide the reader a critical overview of the situation worldwide.
Accompanied by a bold color palette, the report is a 93-page editorial piece, that has been presented to several elected officials and other EU dignitaries to elicit urgent marine turtle conservation measures and prevent their extinction.
This report is the winner of the American Graphic Design Awards 2017.
